It can also be done to highlight some interesting wall décor or shelves having knick-knacks or books.

TIPS FOR DECIDING DESIGN

Now, I will share a few tips for deciding design and colours that will come handy when you colour block.

To choose the design, it's good to draw a few patterns on paper and then choose one. So, grab a pencil and a sketchbook, let your imagination go wild and start playing with straight lines or curves. The picture below will throw some light on what I am talking about.

There are a number of ways in which colour blocking can be done. In this picture you see three design options for the same wall. So, get set go! Draw different designs and select the one you like most. I finally went with the second option. You will see this colour blocked wall below.

CHOOSING COLOURS

Colours
Choosing colours could be tricky and challenging. Decide between monochromatic scheme, analogous or complementary colours.

Zeroing in on the colours could be challenging and overwhelming. Following tips will guide you in choosing colours.

You can choose two or more colours to colour block a wall. You may take help of colour wheel to decide how various colour combinations will look. For example, you can choose complementary colours (colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel) like a combination of purple - green, violet-yellow or blue- orange. These combinations being contrasting often create a striking look.

Colour block with three colours gives a bold and beautiful look. Blue, orange and green are split complementary colours on colour wheel.

However, if you don’t want to take a chance, go for analogous colours which means selecting a set of any three colours next to each other on the colour wheel. These colours often create soothing effect.

Working with monochromatic scheme is also a safe bet. This uses varied tones of the same colour. Check the picture below.

Colour blocking can also be done using two or more tones of the same colour. If you are afraid of experimenting with striking contrasting colours, monochromatic scheme comes to your rescue. The wall in the above picture implements monochromatic scheme with two tones of blue colour. The circle in light blue stands out against the dark blue wall.

Now that you have decided the design and colours, its time to get to work. You will need a painting kit which includes a sponge, masking tape, painting tray, paint brush and roller brush. Below is the link of Asian Paints painting kit which I found on Amazon. I have used it personally and it's pretty good.

Steps to be followed for painting the wall:

  1. CLEAN the wall of any dirt with sponge.

  2. TAPE using masking tape according to the design.

  3. PAINT with colours of your choice.

  4. REMOVE masking tape. Make sure the paint has dried before removing the tape..

  5. Tada! Its READY.
